A Temple Bell Tolls

by Keiko Shibata

leaning on my pillow

touching your softness

a temple bell tolls

beyond the walls

spirit awakens

sun emerges from briny deep

through open window

breathing is life

a breeze from the ocean

instills the soul afresh

clothe lithe nakedness

nipples firm from the chill

evening companion asleep

outside stands a craggy tree

like an old monk in repose

as if to kneel in penitence

leaves quiver, limbs creak

a temple bell tolls again

silence broken

birds chirping

sweet mindfulness

in reverence

walk among the trees

until the sanctuary appears

ancestors are one, within

each day a gift, to share.
