Evening Reprieve ~ a room in Tokyo

by Keiko Shibata*

the middle-aged man is calm

eyes are closed

our skin wet from touch

his mouth catches a breath

away from home

an evening reprieve

from a marriage

where I sleep alone

lying next to my husband

while the world clamors

for attention

how to embrace

that which is gone

a tear of wavering bliss

 kisses my cheek

an evening shadow of light

my mother smiles

her spirit glides across the room

ten years have passed

will visit the shrine

and ask her about life.
