tense murmurs of another beginning

by Jia Li*

not so startled

the distant raucous

up close

 coughs a breath

 cascading mist

rivulets down façade

 conscience like rain

is water speckled with dust

a city swallowing itself

tales in a narrow ally

spiced delicacy

grief smiles

 aching heart nods

 the teacher’s words drift

 a cloud from the mouth

who will hear

tense murmurs

of another beginning.
